When you're 16, getting into the Parkettes was EVERYTHING to some of us.  I remember working really hard with my BFF Connie McKeon to master the splits in my back yard.

When you finally make it into the Parkettes, you feel like you're starting something really special and life changing.  Not only are you a dancer, but you're also a Minnesota Vikings Cheerleader.

There are so many memories from those days...the wonderful trips, performing for the troops during the Vietnam War, dancing for Winter Carnivals and Aquatennial celebrations, the democratic convention, and the hotel guests on some of our trips.  But, I think the most important part of my experience was the discipline, responsibility, and dedication that Mrs. Libby instilled in us.  She made me a better person and I use those skills even today.

Once on a business trip years later, I was flying first class on American Airlines.  Also in first class was Pat Boone.  Mr. Boone was headlining in one of our Minneapolis Winter Carnivals in about 1969 I believe.  We were to perform right after him.  So, we all met him back stage prior to the show.

At some point during the flight, I went up to Mr. Boone and introduced myself, explaining that I was in a dance line many years ago, that we were to perform right after him at the Minneapolis Winter Carnival, and how excited we were to meet him.  Mr. Boone said, almost immediately, "You were a Parkette" and that he recalled the performance.  What a thoughtful man to remember us all those years later!

To have been picked as a Parkette was definitely one of the greatest evenings ever.  Then, to be told we would be the original Viking's cheerleaders, seemed surreal.  It taught us desipline, respect and the love of dance and football.  The sisterhood that was formed will never be broken. Such great memories of Parkettes -- parades, park petites, Unit 5, cheering at the Vikes games, 1/2 time shows at school, poms, moon boots, mesh tights, costumes, flying splits, shin splints, Mazatlan, Hawaii, Bahamas (how lucky were we), and such great friendships. We were really fortunate girls to be a part of this organization! Send Penny a MessageSend Penny a Message
